Our experience was 5 star in every way. Call The Whale answers the phone! They responded to all of our communications quickly and answered all of our questions. The two technicians, Jeremy Berquist and Nick Starzec, were outstanding. They were on time, nice, thorough, worked late on a Friday afternoon to finish the installation of our heat pumps, and double checked and explained everything before leaving. I highly recommend their work.
Professional and Courteous, But Quoted Far Above Market Rate for a Simple Repair I recently had a leak in my Bosch Greenstar Combi boiler (which provides both heat and hot water). After Vermont Gas diagnosed the issue as a leaking supply manifold (a $100 part), they informed me that a licensed plumber would need to handle the repair. Call the Whale was the first company able to respond. I appreciated their quick turnaround and the professionalism of their technician. He was courteous, knowledgeable, and took the time to explain what he believed needed to be done. His recommendation went far beyond just replacing the leaking part—instead, he advised a full disassembly of the boiler, replacement of all seals, cleaning of internal components, and a more extensive repair approach. It took a few days to receive a quote due to challenges sourcing the parts, but when the estimate came in, it totaled $7,200. The technician mentioned that about $2,000 of this was for parts, with the rest being labor for an estimated 8-hour job. That breaks down to roughly $650 per hour—an exceptionally high rate, especially for a repair that wasn’t time-sensitive or emergency-based. Even assuming higher parts costs (say, $4,000), the labor would still be well above standard industry rates. It also was odd to not recommend to replace the entire boiler considering a new one is $5500. For comparison, I ultimately had another master plumber replace only the leaking part for $410 ($100 for the part and $310 — 2.25 hours of labor). The boiler has since been running smoothly, including providing hot water and supporting household use like laundry with no issues. To be fair, I’ll aim to revisit this review during the winter to confirm whether more extensive repairs were truly needed. That said, based on the current results, it seems the initial recommendation may have been excessive. In summary, Call the Whale was professional, responsive, and clearly experienced—qualities that matter for larger projects or system installations. However, for smaller jobs, my experience suggests they may over-recommend repairs and quote labor costs significantly above market norms. I’d recommend getting a second opinion if you’re quoted for small repairs.
Kenny was super efficient and installed our new kitchen sink with ease. He is a wizard when it comes to plumbing work. Highly recommend him and the Call the Whale team.
Started with my AC breaking on a hot summer weekend (of course). Jenn worked her magic and got someone here that Monday. Ken fixed the system so it is like new and the price is very competitive. Impressed, I asked about the HALO water system, sump pump, and split mini. With climate change, I wanted a backup system for my sweet little pup. I also wanted a system where I no longer needed to purchase bottled water and know the water I give my baby is clean and safe. And with global warming and the increase in drenching rain, I needed assurance that my basement would remain dry... Each and every gentleman who came was professional. I so enjoyed them and will miss their coming to do installation. Each has such interesting lives! They run their business the old fashioned way... with integrity and honesty. I am so impressed with their job! You WILL NOT GO WRONG using them! Instead, you will gain a trusted neighborhood professional like the good old days! Thank you!
