Our landlord contracted this crew to do some plumbing for our neighbor. I'l preface this story by adding that whoever built these duplexes in the 80's failed to put in water shutoff valves in the house, in the crawlspace, or garage. The only shutoff is at the meter, in an access point near the road. This team spent a good while outside trying to turn off the water to my neighbor's unit and successfully shut off two other neighbors' water lines before finding the isolating the correct shutoff. It's one thing to ring the bell, and alert neighbors that their water line might be turned off momentarily, but another to just arbitrarily shut of people's water with no permission or warning. In my opinion, that makes them liable for any damage caused -- for example, my dishwasher was running, so it might have burnt up while trying to heat an empty water line. I'm no plumber, but I believe that what they should have done, not knowing which line was which, was this: 1. Turn off all the fixtures in the unit. 2. Monitor all the meters, where the main shutoffs are located. 3. Turn on and off a fixture in the unit, and note the meter that stops and starts. 4. Then, and ONLY then, turn off that line. Let's just say that I'd not recommend this crew for any work on my property.
