Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating provides emergency plumbing services, water heater repairs, and leak fixes with a team of polite plumbers, but has had issues with customer service and pricing transparency.
Nelson & Sons Plumbing & Heating is a local Iowa City business offering a range of plumbing services, including emergency repairs, water heater installations, and leak detection. Their team of plumbers is known for being polite and informative, with some customers praising their efficiency and helpfulness. However, the company has faced criticism for its customer service, with some customers experiencing defensive and argumentative responses from the office staff.
The company's services include water heater repairs, leak fixes, and emergency plumbing solutions. They have a team of experienced plumbers who can handle various plumbing issues, from simple repairs to more complex installations. Some customers have appreciated their ability to provide same-day service and work around busy schedules.
While some customers have reported positive experiences with the company's work, others have raised concerns about pricing transparency and fairness. In one instance, a customer was charged $400 for a pressure relief valve replacement, with the valve itself costing $302. After multiple phone calls, the company corrected the mistake, reducing the valve's cost to $44.
polite, informative
If I could give 0 stars I would. I had just gone through a year long fiasco getting a leak fixed and getting all of the repairs made at a house my daughter rents from my mother. The subcontractor had finally finished the vinyl floor and suggested I have a plumber inspect behind the fridge to make sure everything is fine so it wouldn't happen again. I made this clear to the person who scheduled the appointment and to whoever answered my inquiry online. I few days after the plumber left, I was made aware and was sent pictures that the floor had indents from when the fridge was pulled out. I called to let the plumbing office know. Immediately Michelle became defensive and argumentative. I offered to send her the pictures to which she said I could send them, but they wouldn't do anything about it since I didn't have proof. She made a comment about having pictures from the subcontractor which I said I could probably do since he had them. I got those and sent those to her, too, along with a text from the subcontractor saying the plumber should have known vinyl can be damaged and should have used a dolly. The next morning I receive an email back from Michelle telling me they aren't responsible for anything. We should have cleaned out the fridge to make it less heavy and refrigerators have wheels so they can be moved out (with many spelling and grammar mistakes may I add=not professional at all!). She also told me the plumber pulled the fridge out for less than 5 minutes. How do you do an inspection in less than 5 minutes and how does she know? Was she there? Stay far away from a shady company with a rude office manager who thinks blaming customers is good customer service! Oh my favorite part was when she ends the email with take care and stay healthy. ;)
I had been a customer of Nelson's. I had an emergency Saturday and called their emergency number and no one called me back. I texted and called and never heard from them. I was able to get someone else to help me and avoided a disaster. An hour later, after I had gotten help elsewhere, I texted Nelson's and told them they didn't need to contact me. They should not advertise 24 hour emergency service if they do not provide it. I won't do business with them again.
My 75-yr-old mom needed a pressure relief valve replaced on her water heater. The service call went well and the plumber was very polite. She asked for a ballpark estimate and the plumber said he had no idea what it would cost despite it being a simple and common repair. A few days later my mom contacted me stating she received a bill for $400. The labor was $90 which is normal but the pressure relief valve was priced at $302. I had the same work done two years ago and the valve cost $30-40 with labor at $90 totaling $120. I called on a Monday and spoke with a polite woman that said she would have to speak with the plumber who did the install and she would try to get back to me within a couple of days. After two days and no response I called back and spoke with a polite man who said I would have to talk to the woman I talked to on Monday. I told him I already spoke with her and explained my concern about the cost of the valve. He said it didn't seem correct and he promised someone would contact me by the end of day. Didn't happen. I made a 3rd call the following morning and spoke with the same woman and she quickly made the correction to $44 for the valve. She said the plumber needed to be more specific on the write-up. I politely asked her if pressure relief valves ever cost $300 and she said yes, if they were for a boiler. The invoice clearly states it was for a water heater. I'll leave it up to the reader to determine if it was simply poor communication that resulted in a gross overcharge or if it was questionable conduct in an attempt to take advantage of an elderly lady.
We thought we were out of emergency plumbing options until I stumbled upon a recommendation for Nelson & Sons. They fit us in same-day and were efficient and informative! Great experience with them.
We have used Nelson's Plumbing for several years. Last month we had two incidences that they went above and beyond in helping us resolve. First we lost hot water and had a leak in our tank on a Sunday morning They talked us through shutting off the water and came out later that day to insure it was done correctly. They came back first thing the next morning to replace. the tank. Then we had a leak under our kitchen sink. Although they had a busy schedule they managed to slip us in. The office staff and the plumbers are nice and friendly and helpful. Would highly recommend this business.
